I’m hoping Gilbert Arenas changes his mind because “Quality shot!” is not nearly as cool Gilbertology as “hibachi!” That was Arenas’s mantra, shouted to the rafters every time he launched a shot, often from the rafters.
After firing up Kobe and the Lakers for 60 in a Washington OT victory last week, Bryant dissed the Wizards guard: “…him individually, it’s funny. He doesn’t seem to have much of a conscience. I really don’t think he does. Some of the shots he took tonight, you miss those, and they’re just terrible shots. Awful. You make them and they’re unbelievable shots. I don’t get a chance to play him much, so I haven’t gotten used to that mentality of just chucking it up there. ”
I didn’t even know where to begin, considering the source. Talk about the pot calling the kettle…well, you know, unconscience.
Arenas followed that performance with a 54-point scorcher against the Phoenix Suns two days later, then on Saturday told the Washington Post he was retiring “hibachi” in favor of “Quality shots.” “Maybe Kobe would say that was luck,” Arenas said. “It’s luck when you score 30 or 40, but luck can’t get you 50 or 60. Every game before the game, I make 10 3s from 10 spots on the court. That’s 100 3s.”
Boring. C’mon G, a guy who eats the same thing, dresses the same way and tickles his teammate’s armpit before every game can come up with something better. And I’m sure he will. At least I’m hoping.
Calendar note: The Lakers come to DC on 02.02.07. Fire up the grills.
